Personal change begins with your individual thoughts and attitudes. To truly make permanent changes we need to change our thought process. This is not as simple as it sounds or is it? Recently I had an opportunity to interview a Psych-K practitioner. Psych-K is an integral scientific approach to change negative or limiting beliefs at the subconscious level.
2009 A Time For Change
We have heard over the last year of campaign speeches that the time has come for change. Change can be stressful and sometimes difficult to achieve, particularly personal changes. There is a large business in our society on self help techniques including books and videos motivating people to make the desired changes in their lives. These changes can include anything from weight loss to life style or career moves.
It is the subconscious mind that stores our attitudes, values and beliefs. Self-sabotaging beliefs limit us from achieving our goals. Marie Houston, a Psych-K practitioner, explains that Psych-K uses whole-brain techniques that integrate right and left hemispheres of the brain. When both hemispheres are in simultaneous communication, you are able to maximize your full potential. Many therapeutic and self help change processes depend on fact finding, reasoning, will power, positive thinking and motivation, but may not deal with balancing both hemispheres of the brain to change the thought patterns permanently. By understanding the differences between the conscious and subconscious mind you can make real and lasting changes in your life.
Why Make Changes in Attitude?
Since attitude affects our health, wellbeing and goal achievement it makes good sense to discover where in our life we need to change harmful attitudes. Marie gives an example of how depression lowers the immunity system allowing disease to take hold and lower our energy. The question asked in Psych-K is the belief that has lead to the disharmony causing the anger or depression. According to Marie we simply have two choices, fear or love. Fear creates the disharmony in attitude and actions and love creates harmony in our life.
Where do we begin to make Changes?
When using Psych-K the practitioner helps an individual pin point their fear. Once the fear is recognized an affirming statement is created to begin the work on alleviating the fear. Since change is effected by the sub conscience and the sub conscience mind is very literal, it is important that the affirming statement be very specific and non abstract. At this point the practitioner will take you through a process called VAK which stands for visual, auditory and kinesthetic action. This involves describing the desired outcome from each of the above senses.
Robert Williams in his book, “The Missing Peace in Your Life”, gives examples of what some of the VAK statements may look like:
What will you see in your life to know you have accomplished this goal?
What will you hear others saying about you now that you changed?
How do you feel when you accomplish this goal?
After the problem is identified and a solution or goal is outlined the next step involves a Balance Process. This is a process of using muscle testing, a belief statement and finally permission and commitment. A trained practitioner will guide you through the process.
Conclusion
This is a brief overview of an effective and proven technique to help create change in ones life. Psych-K uses a whole-brain state to help reprogram the mind with new positive beliefs, reducing stress and allowing you to reach your potential.
There is no silver bullet that will magically make our lives and attitudes in constant perfect harmony but techniques like Psych-K can help us along our path for a full filling life experience. The changed thought process creates potential and the action to reach that potential is still up to the individual.
As we enter the new year, look at what changes you want to make and if you need some guidance consider the direction of a Psych-K practitioner and reprogram 2009!
